10 things you can do to make poverty history

Today I’m participating in  Blog Action Day along with thousands of other people blogging around the world, on the theme of poverty. I have read that nearly half the world lives in poverty, and 800 million people go hungry every day.

So what can you do to help? First, make a decision to do something. Then, be creative by using your skills and resources to make a difference. I’ve put together a list of ten simple things you can do, to get you started. Pick one, or two, or three…or come up with your own ideas to use your unique skills.

1. Do what you can. Dream big. Start small. We all have busy schedules. Budgets. Family demands. Or we just never get around to it. Step out, put a date in your diary, and do what you can.

2. Learn about poverty. World Poverty for dummies is on my reading list. I hear that it’s very good. You could also try The End of Poverty by Jeffrey Sachs or in Australia, The Good Giving Guide by Lyn Amy & Mary Pearce.

3.  Speak out. Write letters to officials. Educate friends and family about poverty and hunger.

4.  Volunteer your skills and time with a charity or NGO. Find out if your company has any corporate philanthropy or volunteering programs.

5. Purchase Christmas presents from businesses that contribute to a better planet. For instance Rise Up Productions

6. Sponsor a child. I have a friend who has a sponsor child for each of her children.

7. Contribute to the Woman’s Investment project to help me fund a trust bank for a group of poor entrepreneurial women in the Philippines. All you need to do is write a sentence, spread the word, or make a $10 donation (pass the hat around with a group of friends, if you don’t have $10 yourself)

8. Look through your home and find something to sell on eBay, then give the proceeds to charity. Make something by hand and sell it on etsy

9. Get together with a few friends or colleagues to work on a project. Be inventive. Decide on a charity and work together to raise awareness and funds.

10. Join blog action day yourself and write a post on the theme of poverty

Be part of something special and make a difference

In case you missed it:

“When a woman invests in the lives of others she propels herself forward into more of her own destiny…the unlikely dividend of living a life for others is discovering the purpose of your own”
Anita Pahor, Women’s Opportunity Director, Australia.

If you are a woman with entrepreneurial spirit and you would like to contribute to this special project:

  1. Write a sentence on the theme of “A woman’s Investment” on LinkedIn by the end of October. Alternatively you can email me privately at jasmin at wonderwebby dot com with your response or intent to respond. Or just leave a comment here!
  2. Please include your name, title/company (optional) and Country.
If you have a blog or company website you can list that too, as I will compile an additional list of all contributors and links on my blog.

And spread the word for people to join in or donate! Thank you!

Were you wondering what was on my mind?

Noise & Focus

  1. Identify the noise in your digital life.
  2. Take time out and step back. Then you can pinpoint the noise.
  3. Distinguish the “must read” vs “nice to read”
  4. Determine what your focus is.
  5. Have fun exploring and using social media, but have a goal if you don’t want to drift off into the ether.

Invest & Reward

  1. Assess whether your time online feels like an investment (in yourself or others)
  2. Make each moment count.
  3. Consider what reward you want from your time online?
  4. How is your online conversation time spent and how valuable is it?
  5. Reward yourself. Make time to relax, and enjoy the conversation :)

What do these words mean to you in a social media world? Do you take time to reflect on the way you use the tools and time?

Workplace Idealist

I find it so inspiring when people:

  • start to think beyond themselves and contribute to something greater
  • think about ways to make technology make life better
  • connect with one another
  • learn something new
  • enable others
  • dream big dreams
  • communicate something meaningful
  • express something beautiful
  • think beyond the everyday
  • put purpose into action

It’s a good thing social media allows me to connect with other workplace idealists (and pragmatists and cynics) too!

What are the “ideals” that inspire you at work?

Helping Orphans

A 26 year old friend who had been running a business for five years while raising money for worthwhile causes around the world, found herself bankrupt after her business plans went awry. What did she do? She decided to volunteer in Uganda to assist at Watoto Baby Bullrushes home, to nurture children abandoned due to AIDS or other hardships - who are then placed in caring homes. She recently received some money to help with her own living expenses and immediately purchased 100 exercise books for school children who had none.

I’m glad to know people like Felicity. And I’m glad I can read about her adventures and comment on photos through her blog and Facebook.

Lovin’ Technology

I never would have imagined I would end up working in IT. I studied design, media and animation, not computer science! My final year of high school was spent studying drama, art, languages and the token compulsory science subject. IT was never recommended to me by teachers or family as a career choice.

And here I am, working for IBM. Guess what? I love technology. I’m amazed to see how technology is improving the way we communicate. New media mashes up the medium. Virtual worlds are bringing a new dimension to traditional online interaction. I’m impressed with the way social media helps people to connect with each other, share knowledge and ideas. Purposeful innovation using technology is a wonderful thing. There is so much potential for emerging technologies to improve the way we live, communicate, do business and help one another. Web2.0 has made the difference for me.

Who would have thought working in IT could be so creative?

Serving Purpose

One of my mentors Luis Suarez recently chatted with me about motivation, purposeful living and innovation in the world of web2.0. He nudged me to blog and continue the conversation. Served up: Wonderwebby by special request.

A comment by Luis prompted me to share my motivation to enjoy what I do, collaborate with some great individuals around the world who inspire me, serve them and the company I work for (by my attitude and output) and sharpen my skills so that I have the potential to contribute to some amazing projects in my world. I even have a specific purpose statement scrawled down in a notebook. Not an ambitious career statement about work. A simple purpose statement about my life so I can make the moments count.

It’s different to carving out an ambitious career based on goals, success and awards. Those types of careers are meshed out on a canvas of ego. Okay, I admit I have moments of ego, for instance when my obscure Technorachy ranking goes up etc. But if that becomes my focus, I am looking in the wrong direction.

If we aim to enjoy what we do and who we work with, we might even enjoy the journey. When you have a reason, a purpose, well then you have something to keep you motivated when the going gets tough or things don’t turn out as you planned. Being happy in what you do might help at times - but it doesn’t sustain, no matter what tools you use for collaboration, how buzzy the creative community is or how many “friends” you have. Purpose goes beyond ambition and is a key to innovation. Purposeful living creates individuals who thrive in every moment and impact the world around them, whether at home or at work.

One of the biggest benefits of social media is realised when “the crowd” can go beyond navel-gazing and begin to use the tools to collaborate and explore paths of innovation. How can you begin to contribute to your world?

Thanks Luis for the nudge to post ;)
