Week 7 of Wonderment

A little room, inside Luna park
cheap mirrors and bulbs light our path.
Run around, another dead end,
and so we find a maze of wonder.
For week 7 of the Wonderment project.
Actually, amongst others, I quite liked @hwakelham’s sleeping teddy snapshot this week. A moment of wonder quickly captured, creates a strong abstract impression.
Week 6 of Wonderment: Reinvent

I was on the lookout for wonderment today. Before the day even began, I determined that I would look out for inspiration as I went about my day. You see – last week when I was trying to select a picture for the Wonderment Challenge - it seemed too difficult. Others involved in this creative project shared similar feelings. Restricted by time. Limited by the iPhone camera. Just. Not. Happening.
So I decided to take a different tact today. I realised the day had flown by and I had nearly forgotten to take a photo for week 6. So I grabbed my phone and – no, I didn’t go looking for a pretty thing to photograph - I set about the things I had to do, with a motivation to look at my tasks with a creative and imaginative eye.
The result? I was peeling and cutting some carrot sticks for the kids. I was about to clean the chopping board when my eye happened upon the inviting orange swirls curled up in one corner. Perfect! I grabbed a Japanese dish and quickly arranged them haphazardly. Voila! I must admit, it was fun turning something domestic into something a little more dramatic
Here is a black and white abstract version of the discarded carrot peel I created using the Retro Camera app.
Will you join me in the lookout for something to capture your imagination next week?
1. Join the Wonderment Flickr Group (#wonderment52)
2. Use your iPhone or similar basic camera. Apps are fine too!
3. Submit a photo for week 7 by next Friday.
I must say, I’m enjoying this project because it only takes a few minutes each week AND it is challenging my awareness of creativity to be found amongst the simplest things. When you play, discover and learn – you sharpen your skills to make a difference.
What do you think?

Week 2 of Wonderment

I was looking around for things to capture my imagination today, so I could whip out the iPhone and snap a photo for the Wonderment52 Challenge. Nothing jumped out at me. I even looked around my yard to find something. All I found were things that didn’t belong where they were found, thanks to my three monkeys.
This year my second boy starts school (prep) and we bought a plain art smock along with his uniform today. A pretty momentous occasion!
I asked if he would like to decorate it. A big YES. We quickly grabbed some fabric paint out of the cupboard. What started out as neat lines including a little orange house turned into bright silver and red swirls. Once I used my finger to wipe off a big dollop of paint from his smock, he realised that fingers were a much better way to play with the paint than squeezing it from the fine tipped tube
He caught my imagination with his random, fun approach and I *only just* remembered to grab my phone to grab a few snaps of those fun, colourful moments. It was difficult to select just one but this is the house smudging moment, so I’m keeping it for posterity. Yes, it’s another ShakeItPhoto app picture, even though I planned to post a regular photo this week.
There have been some really lovely contributions to week 1 of the challenge. Thanks Jo for sharing the wonderment of your daughter floating in an imaginary world created by three generations.
It’s not too late to join in this weekly challenge, looking for wonderment. Just leave your Flickr handle in the comments. The challenge will conclude on December 31st 2010.
What captured your imagination this week?

The Framed Ones
Tucked away
Rows of rusted parts
Stacked away
Fragments of yesteryear
Hanging high
Above the crowded curios
Several frames perched in tandem
Skeletons of stories past
Landscapes, abstracts
Memory’s signature
Once held
Within your wooden splints
But for now
You hang askew
Now – in this photo
The framed ones

This is my contribution to a new weekly creative challenge callled Wonderment. Harriet Wakelam and I were chatting on Twitter about how we were seeking a weekly creative challenge this year. Something fun and inspiring, but not time consuming. Something easy enough to do on an iPhone.
And so, Wonderment was born. If you are interested in participating, just leave a comment with your Flickr ID and I’ll invite you. There is just one theme for the year: Wonderment “From illusion, to making a wish. Finding wonder and imagination in the everyday.” It’s up to you to submit a photo each week by Friday-ish (the last day of 2010 is on a Friday.) At the end of the year you’ll have 52 photos to remind you of the things that made you wonder. You don’t need to write a poem. This one just sprung out at me from the image.
Happy imagining!

It started off as a small virtual creative challenge – supported by a real life event to raise some cash and awareness for a nonprofit cause. Now Shout Out Social has grown a little bit more to include some great guest speakers. I’d still love to see heaps more photos or art in the Flickr Group (anyone can submit!) Anyhows, here’s a little blurb about the event…
Shout Out Social promises to be a special two hour event for anyone interested in the arts and community development. This celebration of the creative voice will include a digital exhibition of images and words created by people around the world, and a video message from the inspiring visual journalist Eileen Clegg. Special guest speaker, actor and playwright Shahin Shafaei will be there to share some words, drawing upon his incredible personal story.
Shahin Shafaei
Shahin Shafaei, an acclaimed actor and playwright in his native home of Iran fled his country after having his work banned. He found his way to Australia in 2000 through Indonesian people smugglers, and ended up spending 22 months at Curtin immigration detention center in WA – 10 of those months in isolation. These days Shahin continues his creative work and empowers others to share their own amazing stories through the arts.
This special event will be held one night only – Saturday 14th March 5pm to 7pm at Horse Bazaar in Melbourne (which kicks on until late.) Entry is free and a donation box will be available to raise funds for a Opportunity International Australia project.
You still have your chance to submit photos or artwork to the Flickr group.
RSVP to the event on Facebook or help to spread the word by becoming a Fan! Please tell your friends and come along to be inspired and help make a difference!
And if you would like to be involved in any way – please shout out!
Images that dare to dream

Beautiful images provoke us to dream and imagine the unseen.
I was just about to drop my 52 weeks project, but I think I just needed some fresh inspiration. Thanks Rosie for reminding me about simplicity, imagination and the reward of vibrant ideas combined with a little effort. Now all I have to do is dream up some new ideas of my own….
